Orthodontic Dental Treatment in Dublin

Orthodontics does more than fix your teeth this branch of dentistry will also help you keep your mouth and smile healthy.

The most well known product that relates to orthodontic treatment is metal braces which help move your misaligned teeth so that they fit in your mouth correctly and help you smile with confidence.

When you have crooked teeth or misaligned teeth keeping them clean can be more difficult than straight teeth which will increase your risk of cavities and gum diseases.

With the use of our CT Scan X-Ray machine our Orthodontic Specialists will be able to identify what orthodontic treatment you will require and which is ideal for you needs to create a healthy and happy smile.

When should I think about treatment?

Ideally to get the most benefit from this type of treatment the best ages are between 10 years of age and 14 years of age. At this time in a child their head and mouth are still growing so the teeth are easier to correct and align but in fact you can get braces at any age. There is a growing teend for adults to have braces done to correct teeth that have bothered them for years but financially they have not been able to afford them treatment.
This is changing with Orthodontics Ireland and the introduction of affordable treatments with Payment Plans and more.

How do I ensure the best possible results?

When you have your braces fitted the most important thing for you to keep on top of is your oral health. With braces having tiny spaces between them food and plaque will accumulate. If you don’t clean your teeth by brushing and flossing after every meal you will see your teeth being stained, white spots occurring, tooth decay and potentially gum disease. A Healthy Oral Plan will be supplied to you as part of your ongoing Ortho Treatment Plan.

The more you care for your teeth when you have braces on will have a lot to do with how your teeth look after the braces are removed to present your new smile to the world.

Braces – The MOST Common Orthodontic Treatment

So what actually are braces?

braces1The braces are created in your mouth using bands, wires and bracket. Over the period of time you have the braces on they will gently move all the misaligned teeth into their correct positions so that your bite is fixed.

braces2There are several types of braces available on the market, here we are talking about fixed braces which are commonly made from metal or plastic brackets which your specialist will attach to the front surface of your teeth. Some patients want the braces hidden and these are called “Lingual” braces. One of the drawbacks of these types of braces is they are very difficult to clean as you cannot see them.

The image above shows you what your teeth can look like after the braces have come off and you have not followed our Healthy Cleaning Plan while the braces were on.

How to look after your braces while they are on:

  • Keep to the Healthy Cleaning Plan!
  • Use the tools that are designed for cleaning braces correctly, and these are floss threaders, interdental brushes and there are specially designed electric tooth brushes for patients with braces
  • You must always brush with a fluoride toothpaste and ALWAYS floss after you have eaten
  • Twice a day you should use an antibacterial mouthwash which will help your oral health by killing off bacteria building up in between the braces.

Help your braces by looking after them:

  • DON’T chew on pens, straws or ice cubes
  • DON’T bite your nail or play with elastics
  • DON’T eat hard or sticky foods like toffee and hard candies

By using a flossthreader, makes it much easier to clean between the braces and keep your mouth healthy.
